For eleven years Grant Brooks has been head coach of the Ash Creek Bobcats, flipping the lights at six, carrying a budget vote in December that could fold the program into a neighboring district. His most reliable on-court voice is Mateo Alvarez, a senior point guard balancing leadership responsibilities, family pressure, and scholarship uncertainty while trying to keep the locker room from fracturing. A transfer from Indianapolis, sixteen, tall, quiet about why the move happened in a weekend, plays like a runner and passes like a person who still hopes to be spared the next question.
