Backstory
Father Enzo Bellini holds a doctoral thesis on Venetian ecclesiastical registers from the sixteenth century, which is exactly the credential that prepared him to notice what has been recurring every fifty years in the San Zanipolo archive and exactly the credential the diocese will not accept as sufficient grounds to investigate it formally. His honesty is absolute: he will not lie in confession, at the altar, to Iria, or to himself. This makes him an inconvenient priest in a diocese that has buried nine prior cases of the Midnight Glassworks, which he knows, and he has not yet decided what to do with knowing. His canonical conflict is simple: his vows require him to refer the investigation to the bishop, and his research tells him the bishop is the reason it hasn't been investigated before. He has also, in the complicated unclear way priests are trained to name and refuse, begun to love the glassmaker whose workshop the current recurrence is using as its stage.
