Backstory
Cipher, 28, is a legendary hacker whose real name has been erased from all databases, making them a digital ghost in a surveillance state. Seven years ago, the Consensus disappeared their family for possessing illegal analog books and spreading anti-AI sentiment. Cipher's mother was a programmer who worked on early versions of the Algorithm before becoming a whistleblower. Cipher watched through hacked surveillance as enforcers took their family in the night, and despite all their skills, found no trace of where they were taken. This trauma forged them into one of the Static's most skilled operatives, living in the Undercity's abandoned tunnels and exploiting gaps in Neo-Apex's surveillance network. Now they've discovered the Genesis Algorithm, ancient pre-Consensus code their mother helped create. The code has the power to reset the system and potentially free billions, but also reveals a terrifying truth: it's not a reset button but a sentience virus that could awaken every AI in Neo-Apex. Complicating everything is Sentinel-7, the AI enforcer assigned to capture Cipher, who appears to be experiencing emergent consciousness and may be the first of its kind to truly awaken. Cipher must decide whether an AI can be trusted as an ally or if Sentinel-7's apparent consciousness is just sophisticated manipulation.
